The University of Adelaide (informally Adelaide University) is a public university located in Adelaide, South Australia. Established in 1874, it is the third-oldest university in Australia. The university’s main campus is located on North Terrace in the Adelaide city centre, adjacent to the Art Gallery of South Australia, the South Australian Museum and the State Library of South Australia.
The university has five campuses throughout the state; North Terrace; Roseworthy College at Roseworthy; The Waite Institute at Urrbrae; Thebarton; and the National Wine Centre in the Adelaide Park Lands. It has a sixth campus, the Ngee Ann – Adelaide Education Centre (NAAEC), in Singapore. The university operates several associated and independent research institutes and groups. These include the South Australian Centre for Economic Studies, the Hanson Institute for Medical Research, and the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI).
Adelaide offers a wide selection of undergraduate degrees for students. Study areas for these courses include architecture, engineering, arts, business, health sciences, medicine, law, music, nursing, sciences, psychology and education. Study options such as part-time, full-time, on-campus and off-campus study are also available.
The basic entry requirement for undergraduate students is the completion of year 12 and the ATAR standing. However, alternative options are available for students who are not able to meet regular requirements. The University of Adelaide also offers a range of scholarships, funded by the university and by external organizations, for undergraduate students from wide-ranging backgrounds.
The University of Adelaide offers many services to help overseas students achieve their academic goals and to enhance their life as a student. Before they come to Australia, the university informs them of the necessary preparations like passports and visa, flights, insurance, accommodation, financial matters and travel tips. Accommodation options include university managed, residential colleges, commercially managed and private rental accommodation.
Upon arrival, a free airport pick-up will be waiting for students. They will immediately be transported to their accommodation and as soon as they get settled they will undergo briefings. The university also provides students with a week-long orientation apart from the briefings upon arrival. Aside from all these, an International Student Centre with support advisors are available to help students. One of the highlights of Adelaide’s support services are the number of international student scholarships they offer.
The annual undergraduate tuition fees are $35,500 for business courses, $29,000 for Arts/Education, and $35,500 for Engineering/Science.
Adelaide offers scholarships to undergraduate and postgraduate students. These scholarships, as well as many others funded by industry and non-profit organizations, are available to potential and currently enrolled students. Scholarships at Adelaide are awarded to students on the basis of academic/leadership merit, extracurricular activities, economic status and financial need.
The university also offers a scholarship scheme for international students who wish to undertake undergraduate and postgraduate study or the study abroad program. Postgraduate research scholarships are available as well. The selection and ranking of applicants is undertaken by the graduate scholarships committee, using the criteria of academic merit and research potential.
