Overview

The University of Melbourne is a public research university located in Melbourne, Australia. Founded in 1853, it is Australia’s second oldest university and the oldest in Victoria. Melbourne’s main campus is located in Parkville, an inner suburb north of the Melbourne central business district, with several other campuses located across Victoria.

Melbourne is a sandstone university and a member of the Group of Eight, Universitas 21 and the Association of Pacific Rim Universities. Since 1872 various residential colleges have become affiliated with the university. There are 10 colleges located on the main campus and in nearby suburbs offering academic, sporting and cultural programs alongside accommodation for Melbourne students and faculty.

Melbourne comprises 11 separate academic units and is associated with numerous institutes and research centres, including the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research, Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health, the Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research and the Grattan Institute. Amongst Melbourne’s 15 graduate schools the Melbourne Business School, the Melbourne Law School and the Melbourne Medical School are particularly well regarded.

There are various programs in the undergraduate level which students can take in order to design their professional career.

To cater to the needs of the international student community, the University of Melbourne has designed support programs for overseas students. Pre-departure guidance includes special discussions on student visa processing, the necessary documents students need to bring, student housing, insurance, destination and safety in Australia. Melbourne also offers free airport pick-up so students do not need to worry how to get to their accommodation. Accommodation options include residential colleges, student apartments, homestay, private rentals and share housing.

The minute students are settled, they are encouraged to attend the orientation scheduled by the university. Aside from this, Melbourne’s other available support programs such as counselling services, language and academic services and international student services are offered to students. International student scholarships and financial assistance are also given to students who meet the eligibility qualifications.

The annual undergraduate tuition fees are $36,832 for business courses, $29,632 for Arts/Education, and $35,824 for Engineering/Science.

Melbourne has a comprehensive scholarship program that recognizes outstanding academic achievement of students from Australia and around the world. The university is also committed to providing scholarship access to students who might otherwise be excluded by socio-economic, cultural, geographic and other disadvantages.

Aside from these, Melbourne also has available scholarships for international students. The Melbourne International Research Scholarships (MIRS) is awarded to international students wishing to undertake graduate research degree studies at the University of Melbourne. The duration of the MIRS is up to two years for student undertaking a master by research degree and up to three years, with a possible six month extension, for students undertaking a doctorate by research degree.
