Overview
The University of Newcastle (UoN), informally known as Newcastle University, is an Australian public university established in 1965. It has a primary campus in Callaghan, a suburb of Newcastle, New South Wales. The university also operates campuses in Ourimbah, Port Macquarie, Singapore, Newcastle CBD and Sydney CBD. The University is an exceptional achiever in research with an international reputation for expertise in innovative approaches to teaching and learning. With campuses in both the Central Coast and Hunter regions of NSW, Newcastle serve a community of around a million people.
Students can undertake undergraduate degrees in different study areas through diploma, advanced diploma, associate degree or a bachelor degree.
The basic requirement for admission in Newcastle is an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank or ATAR. Entry help and bonus point schemes are available such as four bonus points for regional students, aboriginal and Torres Strait islander program and educational access scheme. A range of other entry pathways and options to study at Newcastle are also in place.
The University of New Castle welcomes many overseas students each year. They have various support programs in place to help international students adjust to their new life in Australia. Before students leave for Australia, pre-departure information is given regarding matters on student visa, accommodation options, arrival and customs, health cover, finance and what to do and bring. Upon arrival, a free airport pick-up will be waiting for new students.
While at New Castle, the university’s international office will assist and support international students throughout the duration of their studies. A dedicated team of friendly International Student Advisors can provide advice on student welfare concerns and referral to services for academic support, counselling and accommodation. Orientation programs and student activities are also offered.
The annual undergraduate tuition fees are $25,440 for business courses, $25,610 for Arts/Education, and $33,160 for Engineering/Science.
Newcastle has numerous undergraduate scholarships accessible to all students. These scholarships are offered in different study areas and students can apply based on their academic performance, extracurricular activities, leadership/community involvement and financial need.
A scholarship funded by the Newcastle or the Commonwealth government provides annual, relocation and thesis allowance as well as partial payment for tuition fee. Students looking for a scholarship and an industry experience that will enhance their skills before graduation can apply for industry scholarships.

| Other Details | This scholarship was established in 2013 by Catherine and Peter Tay, of Singapore. It is a continuing demonstration of appreciation that in 1968 Peter Tay received his undergraduate education for a double degree in Industrial Engineering and Economics from the University of Newcastle through a Colombo Plan Scholarship from the Australian Government. That scholarship became a stepping stone in Peter's life-long achievements, and helped him to become what he is today. Catherine and Peter Tay hope that an Australian student may likewise benefit from the opportunities and experience that such a scholarship would offer. Its purpose is to encourage high achieving students in districts served by the University of Newcastle to enrol full-time in a Faculty of Engineering & Built Environment undergraduate degree at the Callaghan Campus. |

| Other Details | Joy Ingall (née Davis) demonstrated a natural talent for the piano early in her life. Her aptitude and dedication, coupled with her mother's support, saw her graduate from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music with Diploma and Licentiate Certificates. Her ability was also recognised by the ABC, who featured her in radio broadcasts. Joy pursed her musical studies in the UK, eventually meeting and marrying her husband there. Returning to Australia, she raised six children and as a result, her musical career receded into the background. However, there were still occasional performances at public gatherings, such as parties and meetings of the Labour party. It was at one such function that she met Norman Bushman who, with his passion for music, recognised her talent and encouraged her to pursue her musical career. As a first step, she began giving lessons and played a key role in nurturing many fine musicians. Sadly, she succumbed to cancer before she could fulfill all her dreams and the hopes of supporters like Mr Bushman. Out of a deep respect for her dedication and musicianship, Norman Bushman took on the support of her family and made a commitment to keeping her memory alive.
